" Can anyone tell me why I cannot sell/trade/barter some of my stocks with another person without having to go through a broker? "

Again Bully is proving the adage "a little knowledge is a dangerous thing". He's giving bad advice as usual. My momma always told me that an empty barrel made the most noise.

Lee, you don't have to use a broker to sell your stock. Brokers are simply there to connect through a stock exchange - of which they control - buyers and sellers. For this service they charge a fee.

If you have a friend or acquaintance that wishes to purchase your free trading shares in any Company (public or private) you can do the sale privately. The problem comes regarding Income Tax. You have to report the gain or loss and the sale price has to be within the context of the market, in the case of a public company, or through an independent evaluation of the company assets, in the case of a private company.
