Hey, Poet!

If someone didn't enjoy your post, they have no heart.

(If they didn't enjoy Merlin's post, they have no head!)

It will be party-time in San Diego!

I would encourage the women who posted to me privately to participate actively on this thread, to ask questions, and to understand that almost everyone here is welcoming and willing to share what they know about investing with others who would like to learn.

Funny that you mention that, Poet. At the very moment before clicking to your post I was thinking that we're getting more and more women posting here, more than in most folders I've participated in.

Years ago I and a few others tried our darnedest to convince my friends Tom and David Gardner that there should be a Fool folder dedicated to the discussion of personal finance by women, a watering hole of sorts where men aren't shunned but where women are especially welcomed. At the time, Tom and David disagreed with each other about it but those against the idea won.

For awhile.

A couple years later the folder was established on the Fool Web site and women (along with some highly dedicated men) flocked there. Now we see entire web sites in diverse industries devoted to women. There are reasons the need is there, though I won't take anybody's time to discuss those reasons.

We will all be better off if this folder is diversified when it comes to sex, race, financial wherewithall and background of all kinds. I'd very much appreciate it if more women would help us sort through the gorillas wandering around the jungle. After all, the most famous person to study gorillas (the animal species) was a woman.

Poet, kicking ass

"Kicking ass" no doubt has a poetic connotation I'm not aware of. :)

Go for it, Poet! I admit the thread has been a bit like an Academy Awards ceremony this week, but it has been a nice contrast to the MSFT thread, which has been spewing out about 200 posts every few hours and nobody knows how to digest the news. I personally am balancing euphoria at QCOM with dismay at the FOF, not even so much for the stock price as for what it might do to the industry, and the whole idea of gorillas. Since this is the G&K thread I'd like to see more discussion of it here in those terms. MSFT was a gorilla because it grabbed market share early and made sure to hold onto it. On to my next post, where I'll paste an article from the Washington Post

Very well said. I was a lurker on this thread for quite some time before my first post. Part of the reason is the nature of the thread. There is terminology to understand, there is a "manual" to read. Even after reading the manual it is difficult to determine what is a gorilla and what is not. Much more intimidating than threads devoted to specific companies. But like so many things in life, if you put in the effort you can reap real rewards.

IMHO, this thread has more thoughtful, informative, thought-provoking posts than any other thread I have seen anywhere else. It also is populated by thoughtful, genuinely nice people, who respect - even encourage - differences of opinion.

To all you lurkers out there - anyone who takes the time and effort to read the manual and make a post on this thread will be welcomed. To his great credit, Uncle Frank has established an environment where ideas are respected and personal attacks are taboo. If you are lurking on this thread you have completed 90% of your journey - you have found the best financial thread in cyberspace. The final 10% - getting up to post is easy - just give it a try.
