What is MMDA? Discussed in Senate hearings on MCI/Sprint merger, re: wireless internet.

So, the general drift is TI at the headend
and BRCM for the CPE.

Possibly, but may I suggest a different interpretation. I find it very interesting that a number of the enabling elements for VOFDM are being "borrowed" from the DOCSIS standards and the two VODFM chip vendors are the same as the suppliers of DOCSIS parts. Suppose what is intended is for the head-end equipment to be a multi-service platform able to serve both cable and wireless with only a change in the line card. BRCM and TI would then each be supplying the chips to populate both the head-end cards and the CPE for both media types, and the differences between the chips for cable and those for wireless might be very minor. If VOFDM becomes the DOCSIS HI-PHY standard, they might be identical at the gate level but loaded with different software. In addition, BRCM's QAM expertise would be important because QAM will continue to be the dominant downstream modulation scheme. Such an architecture would seem to be very valuable to a company wanting to offer voice services nationwide without having to pay access fees to the local ILEC and who has access to cable in some areas but not in others. Anyone know of such a company...?
