Yeah, its all true. Plus I used to do part-time commercial diving in that area. And yes they never found the diamond safe. For a long time, if the police found you diving in the vicinity of where the store was (on the pier) you would get arrested. But now its pretty much finder's keepers.... But there is a lot more junk down there too.

Another thing you can find on night dives in that canyon are big fish. There is one nurse shark that looks like a giant catfish, but the first time you see it, you'll probably get a bit scared.

But if you frequent the dive area about the same time the squid eggs are laid, thats when you'll find some of the big fish just hanging out eating them. Fish at night are kind of lethargic.

Another thing you can find usually after the winter storms are pieces of china off the breakwall south of the pier. Thats because in the 1920's the original pier was at about where the breakwall now is. It fell down in a big storm and the restaurant on the end of course was destroyed. Usually if you hit the area after a big storm, much sand has been moved and you'll find china. Another friend of mine had collected a large group of china from the restaurant and had it on display at the library for awhile.

Down in the canyon there is supposed to be a japanese plane from the world war era. I've never seen it but I've spoke with people who have. The problem with finding/seeing most of this stuff, is unless you have a map/gps you are kinda of on your own once your in the black thermocline...
