Richard : KWV VSOP is alleged to be the best brandy made in SAf. You are the first person I know to have used it for cooking! Maybe you scored heavily with your gold shares! What does the KWV cost? In SAf, a good local brandy sells for about $6 US. I'm not sure what KWV sells for here but I imagine it would be around $20.

It's my understanding that most SAf wines and spirits are not widely marketed in the US. Apparently the Australians have cornered the market and SAf product is very expensive. Good local wines have become ridiculously expensive here since most are exported to Europe. Lately, I have been buying wine imported from Chile and Romania which is better value than the local.
