Elmer, <Dan, are you aware that with a i840 system you would have 4 slots?>

He's aware, but he's also aware that on the 840, you have to install RIMMs in identical pairs, so his anti-Rambus FUD still has one leg to stand on.

Sooner or later, depending on hardware validation and certifications, we'll see 840 motherboards with more than just four RIMM slots.

Re: are you aware that with a i840 system you would have 4 slots?

Absolutely, that's why I mentioned that including it in the discussion covered the total memory needs of almost all PC (very near term) requirements.

But while it has 4 slots, it has only 2 banks. You get one chance to add memory (or no chance, if the system comes with both banks populated). So the flexibility possible in upgrading the system is cut in half (two open banks on almost any other system, one open bank in the 820/840 systems). I've even seen a lot of notebook computers that have two open banks - it's certainly the current acceptable minimum for performance desktops (but that could quickly and easily change)

Remember the disparaging comments about AMD's reference board for the Athlon that only came with two banks (one open) for DRAM? No one dared to put such a board into production - they all have 3 banks - like the original 820. But I agree that, technically, 3 banks are mostly a convenience and not really necessary. On the other hand, technically, a Celeron or K6-2 is probably all that's necessary for most users.
