Kerala rubber growers see a silver lining

T P Alexander

Kochi, Oct 6: A Dubai-based Indian businessman Sebastian Mukkadan has come to the rescue of the beleaguered rubber growers in Kerala with an offer to export 30,000 tonnes of the commodity.

Mukkadan, who has been doing business out of Dubai for the past 27 years, has given shape to a new organisation, the Rubber Growers' Association, that seeks to protect the interests of farmers. The association plans to procure as much as 30,000 tonnes of rubber for export in the coming months.

Rubber is Kerala's biggest cash crop after coconut. But the crash in prices, from a high of Rs 75 a kg two years ago to a low of Rs. 25 a kg earlier this year, has left farmers in dire straits. The Kochi-based association would help realise the rubber growers' aims of recovering their investment and making a profit, says Mukkadan, adding that the forum would not be linked to any political party.

The association would procure rubber from all its members at a price one rupee above the market rate. Rubber processing would be done at district levels. Farmers can become association members without paying any fee. The association plans to collect rubber from 300 villages spread across the state paying ready cash without middlemen............
