The reason why we're now discussing fingerprint ID on a cell phone is because the technology has produced scanners that are quite small and thin. The about-to-be-unveiled new generation Identix scanner, the DFR-300, is only about 4 mm thick and about a fingerprint wide and tall. This doesn't leave much of a footprint issue anymore as far as cell phones are concerned.

As to voice recognition, it just isn't reliable enough for the purposes for which it would be used.
