Yes - but what if Rearden was polluting the rivers with mercury poison - or employing child (or slave labour) or operating a mine with tailings ponds which were leaching arsenic into the water supply? Where, in society, do you draw the line between the public and self interest - where does the idea of the common good have any place in a world run by businessmen, accountable only to themselves and 'the bottom line'?
