Sheri,
I agree completely that people should be held accountable for their own actions. In fact theres a guy named Zandt or something like that that proposes legalization of all drugs both drugs of abuse as well as normal blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes drugs etc. why should FDA control what we elect to do with our bodies. I believe this strongly however it will never happen in our lifetmes (which is good for me since I'm a pharmacist sort of a gatekeeper acting as a final check between the doctor and the patient) However with big MO I draw the line for a couple of reasons: first I remember when I was about 14 yo reading a book called subliminal seduction...many of you may remember it. It detailed the tieing of sex to these ads. this was very powerful stuff for adolescents exposed to these ads. These tobacco co's clearly did not play fair and went after underage smokers to hook them and ensure steady revenue streams for 40 to 50 years...look at the billboards in harlem or south LA sex sex sex healthy sexy bodies...bullshit!
Point 2: the diseases caused by cigs frequently not always are picked up by yours and mine tax bills...you could say we are supporting big MO's machine...enough is enough if you're going to regulate drugs (I don't neccessarly think you should) than cigs should be strictly regulated...they are a nicotine delivery system nothing more nothing less and the tactics used to push them on minors, minorities, woman are unconscionable.
