Well, to be honest, I don't know Texas much, so I can't speak from experience. Texans seem to wear stereotypical American values on their shirtsleeves, just as you say. OTOH, there are few more challenging metropolitan areas to raise children than here, imo. Of course that could be said of most US metropolitan areas. But the state of the average public school throughout this region makes it that much more difficult, imo.
