Chip industry marches out of the doldrums

...Yet there are plenty of smaller players. One of the key bellwether companies is Cymer in San Diego, which makes specialized lasers used to etch the most-advanced microcircuits on silicon wafers.

After posting three quarters of net losses, Cymer recently reported a strong gain in its earnings and revenue for the third quarter ended Sept. 30. The company also said it had booked $80.6 million in orders, a 57 percent gain from June to September.

Robert Akins, Cymer' s chairman and chief executive, attributes the results to "strengthening of the semiconductor industry."

He also says the company' s primary challenge in the quarters ahead is to increase production to meet the demand from chipmakers for its newest model laser, which is expected to comprise more than 80 percent of Cymer' s system sales by mid-2000.

Because chipmakers use Cymer' s laser technology to make the most-

advanced chips, analysts say their orders for Cymer' s equipment reflect the front end of chipmakers' efforts to expand production.

"Cymer is a direct play on this increasing complexity," Hodess says. "You drive down the manufacturing costs by putting more functions on the chip. And that requires going to more advanced process technology, which is how you end up with a more advanced semiconductor chip."...

Curlton will report as soon as he gets
over being shell shocked about
OSU being beaten by Mich. St.
He's hoping for a re-incarnation of Woody Hayes, OSU's last great coach.
