do you have some specific ideas or know some web based resources on this beyond Bob's general comments,

I have repeatedly mentioned SFE and one if it's offspring ICGE...both are heavily involved in BTB companies and learning more about these two (not necessarily buying them Monday) might lead to some other interesting ideas. Just following the SI threads can be helpful. For example, while reading the ICGE thread at SI I came across this interesting looking web broadcast scheduled for next week:

siliconinvestor.com

You might want to go to the SFE web site a look around:

safeguard.com

and if you are able, get hold of their latest annual report and read it cover to cover. This is not so much an endorsement of SFE as it is a suggestion of where and how to learn about the emerging opportunities in the sector.

Hi Mark - Pick up the November 1999 issue of RedHerring. They have a special section discussing B2B exchanges. There are seventeen different sections covered. I have not finished reading the different sections but it does provide a good overview of B2B type transactions. This appears to be a huge growth area providing significant "potential" efficiencies for medium and large businesses.

Here are some links referenced in the RedHerring magazine articles:
redherring.com
redherring.com
redherring.com

One specific area that interests me is the B2B bandwidth exchanges (pg-204- November 1999 RedHerring). These companies provide real-time exchanges for switched minutes, IP packets, bandwidth "on demand",and co-location Internet services. The companies listed in the article include:

Arbinet Communications (http://www.arbinet.com)
Asia Capacity Exchange (http://www.ACE-ASIA.com
Brand-X (http://www.BAND-X.com)
Enron Communications (http://www.enron.net)
Global TeleExchange (http://www.thegtx.com)
InterXion (http://www.INTERXION.com)
Min-X (http://www.MIN-X.com)
RateXchange (http://RATEXCHANGE.com)

There are lots of opportunities in B2B exchanges. The Internet brings together the buyers and sellers of products and services and allows for efficient "real time" transactions.

Marc, I took my own advice, taking a close look at all of the SFE "partner companies" described in detail at the Safeguard web site and came up with Cambridge Technology Partners (CATP), about 12% owned by SFE. This is what got my initial attention:

Cambridge Technology Partners Teams With World's Leading Retailer to Bring Its 90 Million+ Customers Online
CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 25, 1999--
Cambridge Leads Construction of Wal-Mart.com, Coordinating Efforts of Multiple Vendors

It's selling at about $16, with a market cap under $1B, real sales and real earnings, selling at a PE of 28 and Price/Sales about 1.60. Looks to be in the right place at the right time, but still under the radar of the B2B market participants. Interesting to note that neither SFE nor CATP are on Brinker's B2B list at his site, at least not yet. Anyway, this one looks interesting, though I am not in it yet except through my position in SFE.
