Testing, documentation and support will (without software patents)
remain a viable business. If commonly used applications were freely
available with source, companies would hire programmers to modify
it to perfectly fit their particular needs, which then becomes the
"big industry". To be able to this is a strong business advantage.
You may feel threatened by this if you are a software developer and
start talking about arrogance, but not at all: it will just enable
new business, ie customisation, service and support, and software
advances will happen faster because one can build upon work created
by others. This change will happen, but gradually. We'll see if
Bill is as slow to see this as he was with the internet.
