rnwk - service wins over technology in a platform space...anyone who goes after platform competes against microsoft. and even with court rulings that's no guarantee of anyone winning against microsoft in the tech platform space yahoo has done well precisely because it's a 'service' that developed a great relationship with users realnetworks has the chance to be the multimedia portal leader but they have wasted time doing so, just as netscape blew a chance to be a portal leader by default realnetworks still has that chance but now i think they must buy traffic/users/complementary assets such as audio-video portals that are much smaller, roll them in and blow it out
