Presto - as common as it is they were protected. Someone was looking out for them. As far as the suitcase, people that travel a lot sometimes keep a spare suitcase packed. I would guess, the killer(s) knew the victims or were working for someone who knew them and the murders will never be solved. The gun was probably small calibre and the killer had no problem peppering a few shots at the victim before finishing the job. A 9mm or 357 would blow a limb off, that is why the guns would have been small calibre, probably muffled. Shooting a small 22lr inside without a silencer will cause loss of hearing.

Sure. But if Kim was going to Florida, and planning to stay there for at least a week, then what? Chalem was joining her; there wasn't any staff at the Colts Neck house.

But Chalem and Kimberly evidently traveled quite a bit between New Jersey and Florida, so it's possible that as jhild suggested, Jeff went to a private school. He may always have boarded there, or may have been able to board there when his parents were away.
