El Hutchison/Compaq JV wins HK govt contract HONG KONG, Nov 8 (Reuters) - The Hong Kong government said it has granted a contract for the supply of an Electronic Service Delivery (ESD) system to a joint venture of Hutchison Whampoa Ltd and Compaq Computer Corp. Timbo Star Investment Ltd, which is a joint venture between Hutchison's Hutchison Communications Ltd and Compaq Computer Ltd, would use the system to provide ESD services for the government for five years, the government said in a statement. It said the term could be extended for two more years. The first phase of the ESD scheme would be launched in October 2000, a spokesman said in the statement. The government declined to comment on the contract value but a spokeswoman said more information would be available at a signing ceremony on November 12. The government would invest HK$123 million to establish its own systems to tie in with the implementation of the ESD project. A total of six bidders participated in the tender exercise held this year, it said.
