Darrel re: the announcement was that overall margins were affected. normal margins from expected sales plus decreased margins from unexpected sales still yields slightly overall lower margins. earnings were not discussed, but assumed.

It is important for management to point out unexpected business effects on a metric that analyst use in their Dell financial model. This is quite fair for investors and analysts. Dell as you said overtly stayed away from drawing earnings conclusions positive or negative.

Since the one time cause of this metric change was an earthquake, and the metric effects earnings not revenue, revenue is the more important financial result to focus on to value Dell's future. Focusing on earnings this quarter would be a head fake.
