There is conflicting accounts on Conkling and friend's expected arrival. Their description has evolved from workmen (carpenter and electrician) to work associates. Whether they were expected is not clear. One account describes them as concerned and driving to the estate out of that concern.

This begs the question why they would have had such a heightened sense of concern to drive there after midnight. Did they have reason to believe that they might in fact be in danger? These guys weren't coming to spend the night for a trip the next day. Lehmann perhaps, to avoid having to drive from Long Island to NJ in traffic the next day, but Conkling lives in NJ.

The attire of the victims is interesting. They were in suits. But they may have still been in suits from other meetings they had during the day. Chalem was wearing a baseball cap by one account, maybe even that same cap he is pictured in. I guess he was a little vain about hair loss. But in any event, if there was a meeting that evening it was not with anyone that they were trying to impress. I think wearing a baseball cap with a business constitutes dressing down. (I suspect that Amy Vanderbilt would agree.)

And where are those dogs?
