short covering? I don't think so, short shares were at an recent term low last time I checked.

Selling into any rallies is what I would do also. The tobacco companies had many a rally before they traded at these historically low prices.

assuming your shares are owned outright (not on margin), it is my understanding that you could protect your position with puts and defer any tax consequences. also you could borrow against your stock to buy the puts. i believe the puts would stop the running of your holding period but that is no harm if your holding period is already long term.
