I don't know what it is... ego? or perhaps short-term thinking - as if investing short is impossible? With that attitude, bears are doomed before they ever begin.

Clearly, the great mass of older, smaller, non-index stocks just decays in monotonous langour.

hey - I'll go further - it's a well known fact that at least 80% of the fund managers fail to beat the SnP500. Since some brokers allow shorting funds, this is a tradeable phenomena. IOW, forget stocks and indices altogether... throw 10 darts at the mutual fund pages : and a short investment position of at least 8 of these 10 darts against SnP500 basis will make money year after year.

Mutual Funds are Bear Indices, for chrissake !
