There was fine debate that was essentially on some of the points that this letter raised that is very recent. The debate centered on whether or not the complex SQL queries generated by MSTR software would be practical with large databases, or whether it would be too large and slow to scale up. I have no information as to whether the technology is capable of performing adequately, but I can see logical reasons why there could be performance problems with such large, direct queries.

I can tell you that all of these companies have been growing fast over the last several years, and that MSTR has been growing faster than most. I believe that the reason for this growth is that with the growth of the internet it is increasingly possible to make current and flexible information available to regional managers. I further believe that this need will continue to increase.

As a result, I do have investments in this area, but because of my questions over the technical practicality of the ROLAP approach, I have focused on the data warehouse companies (INFA, ARDT, SGNT) and the DOLAP companies (COGN, BOBJ, BRYO, SGNT) that access data in the data marts. I understand that by concentrating and "enriching" the data in data marts and data warehouses some of the flexibility may be sacrificed, but I believe that response time should be much improved over a ROLAP approach, and I believe that flexibility should still be very good.

That much said, I have no personal experience with any of the products in question, and I am certainly no expert. Therefore any opinion that I may have is probably of little help to you.

As for the questions of the other internet products and channels offered by MSTR, I know absolutely nothing about them. Remember, I am just a casual browser here, and have never had a position in MSTR. I take it from your informant that he is negative as the MSTR in particular, and not as to the sector as a whole?
