Your strategy is one that I've considered, however; you don't just lose out on potential gains to the upside.

You might lose the stock unless you are both willing and able to finance the buyback premium.

If it rises significantly your puts would be near worthless.
If you have cash available, you can buy back the calls. If you don't have cash you would need to generate some to hang on to the shares.

I felt that the short term premium on the options just wasn't worth it.

In fact, when I look at the number of puts open, I see that it is quite high. If there were no puts, I can see the MM running the stock down. With all the puts written there is relative balance. The MM has no incentive to run this baby down.

In fact, I hope that everyone else that owns JDSU buys protective puts. Events tend not to happen when everyone is expecting them to.
