Do I understand you to mean external and internal devices should not be mixed on a single adapter?

NO! If you try to connect your motherboard SCSI connector, your internal SCSI devices and external SCSI devices in a T configuration with your motherboard SCSI connector at the junction of the T you will have termination problems. However, if you use the configuration suggested by Qwiksand
you can bypass the termination problems caused by a T configuration.

why did you recommend the AVA-2906?

Low Cost. You don't need a high price SCSI controller that supports Ultra SCSI and Wide SCSI like an AHA2940U2W to run external devices like JAZ removable drives and scanners.
The following is a summary of the different flavors of SCSI available.
SCSI-1 5MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus
SCSI-2 5MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus
SCSI-2 Fast 10MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus
SCSI-2 Fast Wide 20MB/Sec 16 bit SCSI bus
SCSI Ultra 20MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus
SCSI Ultra Wide 40MB/Sec 16 bit SCSI bus
Ultra2 Wide 80MB/sec 16 bit SCSI bus

The AVA 2906 only supports SCSI-1 5MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus,
SCSI-2 5MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus, and SCSI-2 Fast 10MB/Sec 8 bit SCSI bus devices.
