Well the Athlon is enjoying some demand above some Intel parts and below others. It looks like the performance of the AThlon is allowing it to shoulder the lesser Pentium products aside. Still a mobo shortage though and we will not see a level field until all other components are available. What AMD needs nos is a pin grid array socket, akin to the socket 370 to make use of the lower costs therein. It would be best to actually use the socket 370 sockets and others parts as that would give the lowest possible cost. Need some design work to get the heat away, but doable IMO. Of course it will not be a pin for pin Intel socket 370 part, just using a widespread and cheap resource. That would knock $40 of the system cost with some at the mobo side and some on the CPU side.
