Third choice: the publicity got out of control all by itself, because a new and effective remedy for the common cold is that compelling a story.

But if you think that was out of control, wait until Kovel/Fuller gets in gear.

Mark,

There are several other possibilities in addition to the two that you presented. I will only say for now that when money and fame are at issue, politics can play a big role. It is possible that politics are being played by organizations completly outside of GumTech, Gel Tech, and Edelman. Other than this, I'd rather not speculate on this issue until I find out what happened. I hope to have some answers later today.

Paul M: Zicam doesn't mask the symptoms, so it may appear that it isn't working when you first start using it. My experience is that the symptoms go away quickly after they start to diminish. The other possibility is that Zicam is only effective on rhinoviruses or other viruses that use the nasal ICAM to infect cells in the nasal cavity. These viruses are believed to cause 70% of colds. If you don't have a cold caused by one of these viruses, then Zicam won't work. Please keep us updated on your progress, and I hope you feel better soon.

Have a nice day, everyone.

Dan

. And if it's a screw-up, how can we expect them to successfully compete against the big drug and consumer products companies (some of the savviest(sic) marketers on the planet) when they botch something this simple?

Mark, I know you are hung up on this issue...I don't think any company is devoid of marketing blunder. History is replete with those. One that comes to mind, referring to "big consumer products companies" was the great Coke switch... Good execution turned a marketing "disaster" into a major success.... GUMM isn't KO, but then, KO hasn't developed a dramatic relief for the common cold either....
