HDR offers 3G like capabilities about 2 years sooner than 3G.

Another brilliant move was to create two separate chip sets, 1x one for voice and HDR for data, rather than try and come up with one solution for both.

I gathered that this is one of the problems the GSM upgrades are having - that is, coming up with a clear path to provide fast data without compromising voice capacity or quality.

(To qdog: Yes, I am taking Dr. IJ and his team at face value until I am shown I should not.)

Also relevant here is Dr. J's comments about the various standards bodies with regard to HDR. He said changes are happening so quickly that the standards bodies cannot keep up. What seems to be a be better path for acceptance is to put together ad hoc groups to work out preliminary standards. He used as examples Bluetooth, WAP, and Cisco's consortium (which he specificly said was very interesting -is Q planning to approach them to use HDR?)
