Thank you for that informative post Joan. Father Coughlin's remarks were certainly strident and intemperate in that 1939 speech. I guess when real bullets are flying the rhetoric heats up too. I still question how bad he really was, though I'll certainly concede he's not the Pat O'Brien character I thought he was. His speeches from the early 30's talk of social justice, a living wage, etc. He must have really got the war fever.

I question whether Christian Identity is using Father Caughlin as an example. I have a hunch that is a construct of The Southern Poverty Law Center or a similar group. I know for a fact that Christian Identity is anti-Catholic. I like to wear my Our Lady of Guadalupe t-shirt to gunshows and watch the Christian Identity guys recoil. It's fun. There is no way that bunch of low-lifes would embrace the teaching of a Catholic.

It gets complicated when we try and sort through writings of people who have political agendas. I think the contemporary writings are probably the most useful. The passage of time blunts those real sentiments that were in the air and I think we miss something when we try to analyze in this different mindset.
