HandsOn,

Be careful if you go with cable. They bundle user access so you may start out with quick speed only to find out as the cable company ads users your data rate slows significantly.

ADSL is fairly new technology and there are new types of ADSL packages on the horizon. It's not tried and true yet but few things are in these times but if I had to make the choice it'd be ADSL.

RE ADSL - I have ADSL coming the first of next month through Ameritech. $49/month, and $150 setup fee. The equipment (NIC?) is normally $199 and is free during this "special". The speed is 768k downloads and 128k uploads.

I have been waiting for about a year to be able to get either a cable modem or ADSL. My advice is to get ADSL. You may want to check whether your phone company has a cheaper access. In general, my advice is to get it. If something better comes along in the future you can always change. Just don't lock yourself into something long term.

Good Luck ... RS

HandsOn:

I got ADSL a couple months ago. My phone co. is GTE. No set-up fee, they gave me the modem (Fujitsu) with a one-year commitment, and the line charge is $35/month. I pay $22.95 on top of that for the ISP.

It is worth it in every way. Not quite as fast as cable, but then cable is shared, so the more people you have in your location, the slower the speed becomes. That's not a problem with DSL.

PM me if you want more details.

I have Comcast@Home cable service. For downloading anything, cable just can't be beat. Even though it's shared, there are still so few subscribers there has been no impact. Installation was free, cable modem rents for $2.95/mo and monthly charge for ISP/cable service is $39/mo. No need for additional phone line (except for kids, faxes, etc.), so if you're looking to economize, it's the way to go. But if you're like me, you'll end up keeping the additional phone service anyway.
