"IE gains lead in corporate browsers"zdnet.com Survey finds 64 percent of corporations surveyed picked Microsoft's Internet Explorer over Netscape's Navigator. By Grant Du Bois, PC Week November 8, 1999 1:30 PM PT Microsoft Corp.'s lead over Netscape Communications Corp. in the browser war has increased, according to survey results released Monday by Zona Research Inc. The Internet consultant reported that of 236 corporate IT respondents, 64 percent chose Microsoft's (Nasdaq:MSFT) Internet Explorer vs. 36 percent who chose Netscape's Navigator. Of those companies that have standardized on a browser, 69 percent selected IE, while 31 percent have gone with Navigator. "In striking similarity to the cola wars of the 1980s, shelves that primarily were filled with a preponderance of competing brands have all but given way to the reality of a Coke- and Pepsi-dominated marketplace," said Clay Ryder, vice president and chief analyst at Zona, in a statement. "Likewise, brands such as Quarterdeck Mosaic, Wollongong Emissary and NCD Mariner have fallen by the wayside in a market controlled by Microsoft and Netscape." Ryder also stated that both companies have shifted their attention away from browser technology toward Web content through their portals. Zona, a subsidiary of IntelliQuest Information Group Inc., of Redwood City, Calif., called its survey results its "final browser study" and declared the "end of an era" in the four-year battle of browsers. Zona first began tracking the browser market in January 1996 when Navigator had an overwhelming lead over IE in the corporate market. That lead started to decline about three years ago until IE overtook Navigator in mid-1998, according to Zona. Zona's browser study is available at zonaresearch.com .
