Rudedog,

If the source code for DOS/Windows & NT desktops were open,
standardized, and free there would, by definition be no
incentive to maintain it and improve it any more than there
is for FreeBSD, for example.

It would be worthwhile for the computer industry as a whole
to fund such an effort. I don't think it would be cost-
prohibitive, but that's just one idea. The industry itself
would benefit from having a standard O/S with known interfaces
and, IMO, would benefit from the appls sold to run with it.

Like I said, I believe it would energize the PC business and
allow MSFT to get on with things without this hanging over
their heads like the sword of Damocles. For some reason, I
can't see something like money standing in the way....
