How in the world can we accuse the Russians of violating Geneva conventions when NATO made those Conventions irrelevant???

Of course, the Russians' response to criticism from NATO countries has been just that, and they charge Western governments with applying "double standards", with hypocrisy, & etc.

And they do have a point. IMO, WHOEVER tries to save soldiers' skins by long-distance bombing will inevitably end up killing civilians. I think it is a cowardly thing to do, myself; it's part of being a soldier, after all, to risk one's life to save civilian life.

But consider this little witticism: "The Russians are using NATO tactics in order to achieve Milosevic's objectives."

In Yugoslavia, after all, civilians were not the target of the bombings -- that was all "collateral damage". In Chechnya, they are the target, whatever the Russian military machine may tell you to the contrary. And there have already been far more casualties from the bombing in Chechnya than there were from the bombing in Yugoslavia.

I guess it's a question of degree, as well as of basic objective.
