IBM Outlines Post-PC Era
(11/08/99, 7:24 p.m. ET)
By Edward F. Moltzen, Computer Reseller News

IBM will begin unveiling a series of products
and alliances to take the first steps in the
"post-PC" age, a top executive said.

Phil Hester, chief technology officer for the
IBMPersonal Systems Group, said the company is
developing a game plan, internally called "EON," to
broaden offerings at the edge of the network.

"We've been getting lots of questions about where this
marketplace is headed in the post-PC era," Hester said
in an interview. "We wanted to articulate our vision on
the next level of detail about the post-PC era. This does
not mean the PC is going away."

Specifically, Hester said, IBM will begin unveiling
products, technology, and alliances to push broadband,
communications, processing, network software, and
pervasive computing to the next level.

EON, for now, is acting as Armonk, N.Y.-based
IBM's framework for that technology, Hester said.

"On the pervasive device side, we will sort of look at
what's happening with wireless technology," Hester
said. "Again, with the continued evolution of Moore's
law ... a whole new class of these pervasive wireless
devices can supplement the full-function capability you
have on the desktop or notebook."

With the EON framework, IBM is taking its first public
step into the post-PC era since IBM chairman and
CEO Louis Gerstner proclaimed the new age in the
computer maker's most recent annual report.

Hester stopped short of saying which products would
come first out of the effort, or which alliances.
However, he said there has been no commitment yet to
a separate unit or division for EON, the way IBM
developed its technology group or Internet division,
because of the broad nature of the technology involved.
