Petz,

< 1. Did you notice a drop in Celeron ads like I did?>

I didn't pay attention to this. I'll check the ads again to see if it's true.

2. Did you notice that most stores with more than one location (small stores, not the COMPUSA's etc.) -- most of these are advertising Athlon systems? To me this indicates that the stores that are doing better are the ones selling the Athlon

I didn't pay attention to this either. But, what I noticed was that these outlets can be categorized into three segments-

a) High end systems - About 25% advertised high end systems only (no celerons, or k6-xs). Before Athlon, these stores carried only PIII systems, and I thought they were Intel only outfits. But after the Athlon release, about 50% of these outlets started advertising Athlon systems up to 700MHz. This is how I realized that these outfits have been specializing in the high end systems. I don't think you will ever see Celerons, or K6-xs penetrating this segment.

b) Low to Mid high end systems - about 60% of the outlets fall into this category. All most all of these outlets advertised systems with all flavors of CPUS.

c) Low end only - The remaining(~15%) outlets were selling only the low end systems - mostly of Celerons, K6-xs, PIIIs up to 500MHz. Only one store from this category, advertised Athlon system(500 only).

IMHO, because of these segments, you will never see 100% proliferation of Athlons or 100% proliferation of K6-xs. But, we may see close to 100% proliferation of AMD systems (Athlons + K6-xs).
