GREAT NEWS FOR AOL: Microsoft May Have to Pay Damages to Rivals and Consumers New York, Nov. 9 (Bloomberg) -- Microsoft Corp. may be forced to pay huge amounts in damages, if found guilty of using their monopoly in computer operating systems to hurt consumers and competitors, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing Sam Miller, a antitrust attorney involved in an earlier case against the software company. If Microsoft loses the case, America Online Inc., will be in a good position to take out a private suit against the firm on behalf of Netscape Communications Corp. shareholders, the software company acquired by AOL earlier this year, the WSJ reported, citing a person close to the company. Other firms and customers are also likely to seek monetary damages from the company, giving Microsoft an incentive to settle the case before the ruling next spring, the WSJ said. The development comes after U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, said Friday that Microsoft ''stifled innovation'' by using its dominance in the market to squash rivals.
