Peach, doing ipos my old "don't try this at home" way can be done OK if it's done cautiously... not buying very many shares, not being too greedy, when liking the Co. enough already to plan on increasing the hold in either case.
I think if an ipo doesn't meet this criteria; then it's not a trading strategy but a big-chip bet at the craps table. I've done that with stocks a time or two; won some, lost some. But i'm not in a gambling mood lately.
Never did an ipo before last Dec., UBID was my first. I got some ipo shares, and i also bought in @ Open. I Won. Sometimes Beginners Luck can be the worst luck of all, in the long run. Because the next ipo (MINE, now BOUT) went just as well. Quacked 'em both just right too. After that, i tried TSCM for more shares, and it didn't go so well. Stayed at the table too long, bet it too big, was why.
When i learned yesterday i'm getting a nice chunk o' xchtrx instead of the usual measly share #, i was so relieved to cancel that buy @ open order. After seeing it go both ways so far, i looked closer at 'em wondering why.
And here's why - when i was glad i bought right @ Open for whatever $.... the stock had smaller #s of shares in The Float, and hidden treasures. Thinking the Bigtime Notice Beforehand might not bode so well for an ipo zooming up past the open, & staying flying. We'll see.
So mostly, I Got Lucky - What we don't like to talk about TSCM it went "the other way" (groan) and i was in for more than i should've been. So it fell, i waited, it never happened, sold it for a song. But i'm still ahead... UBID & MINE did much better, and i increased MINE & quacked it a time or two from there, & i don't have any these anymore.
If i hadn't gotten so many ipo shares, i would've still bought xchtrx @the open today, but not many. Enough to do nice if they go the way i hope, not so many to take a bad hit if they don't. Then, wait and watch for the opportunity to increase the hold at the right price, later. I'd say that's the sensible way to play it; to up the ante of the bet turns it into a high-stakes crapshoot with a big pile of chips could go either way on a throw of the dice. Just a few shares is best to get in on it; so it's a win/win either way it goes (almost).
Greed is NG... IF you're a winner, U win bugger with more shares ... BUT... etc.
So that's the refinement of the "don't try this at home" way of buying ipos at the git-go for whatever.
I learn so much on this board, Thanks 2U & Blue & All!!
