This looks like a viable strategy for WCOM in the domestic market so long as they never look up.

"Teligent's (Nasdaq: TGNT) pitch to small businesses is that it provides high bandwidth at a lower cost than its wire-line competitors. But in order to do that, it must first build out broadband wireless networks across the world -- a costly undertaking." Red Herring.

Teligent have spent around $2 billion so far and do not have coverage into every office in the US yet. The cost to build base stations to cover the entire world would be trillions! It cost Vodaphone $1.6 billion to create 95% coverage to little old England, a tiny country with no hills over 800 feet.

A space system would give Teligent wireless coverage over every house, office, factory ship, car and plane in the whole world for less than $2 billion!

Dirtside wireless infrastructure will always cost far more than spaceside. Thats why Echostar and direcTV are doing so well, their infrastructure cost is a fraction of cable.
