You are correct that it is useful to keep an open mind to the "nay-sayers" and skeptics. Wise investing policy.

One question though. Where did he get $2.95 fy00 earnings? I do not remember seeing any estimate that low. Is it his? If so, he should say so, and also say what the majority of forecasts are.
