Arnie, the bits and pieces of info I pick up is normally not of a technical nature. Good thing too, as a business major a little technical knowledge is dangerous! I don't pretend to understand how those darned iDEN phones work, just glad they do. I'm sure you've seen the recent Nextlink article, where DA stated in the near to intermediate term Nextlink and Nextel will remain independent. Since Nextlink (LMDS) and Level 3 aren't ready for prime time just yet, I think that's a reasonable statement. But IMO, in 12 to 18 months things will change. I think the following announcement could be a harbinger into the future. "Earlier this year, Motorola and Cisco teamed up on an effort to define a means of integrating wireless-mobile networks into the IP domain. Their effort includes plans to spend $1 billion on research-and-development centers for third-party developers, as well as an attempt to create a new IP-based architecture for the sector. Now, the effort will be expanded to include fixed-wireless broadband in that architectural framework, said Skip Stritter, director of market development for broadband wireless at Cisco" 204.243.31.23 Since Nextel hasn't publicly announced their path for higher speed data (and rightfully so, IMO), this of course is just raw speculation on my part. However, I do feel rather confident their plans will include Nextlink in some way, shape or form. BTW, I think your bold wager consisting of part of a Nextel share is safe. I'm willing to stick my neck out further and wager my Lion playoff tickets that the Calixe will bring home the white-golden pearls from the sea. Ron

Arnie, now that CM has invested some dough into ICO, and the suggestion has been made he could integrate it with his cellular empire, it's time to bone up on your orbitology. From what I understand the ICO sats will be able to transmit data to ground terminals at 64 kbs and beam data to mobile ICO phones at 9,600bps. This sounds painstakenly slow! Do you expect these yet to be launched sats to be modified to increase speed? Is it possible to interface the ICO constellation with existing iDEN phones? Can ICO use existing Teledesic spectrum? Would this help increase speed? How will they market the service? Since you don't work, or play golf, can I expect some answers tomorrow? <G> Ron
