Than why is he raising money for Washington Dems.?

I think it shows that Gates can make subtle distinctions. There's not a single elected official in the state of Washington who has expressed public support for the DOJ suit. Locke, the Democratic governor supported by Gates, has criticized the suit. From the Seattle Times story on the campaign function:

No one should be surprised that a local politician paid homage to the hometown software magnate. But Locke made it clear last night that he thinks his friends in the Clinton administration will ultimately lose their case against his friend in Redmond.

[Sidebar: It's notable that Washington's anti-trust activist AG who was one of the lead attorneys in the tobaccos suit did not join the states' suit against Microsoft.]

There are several points of agreement between the two (including bad hair cuts).

Microsoft gave significant corporate donations in opposition to a recent tax-cutting initiative that was supported by prominent the state GOP. Locke and the Democratic party in general joined Microsoft and Boeing in calling the measure irresponsible.

In his personal donations, it's obvious that Gates has high interest in education. In his remarks at the campaign dinner last night, according to TV reports, Gates singled out Locke's educational programs and his technology initatives as reasons for his support of the governor.
