DECUS DAILY
UPDATE

Monday November 8, 1999

First impressions are important, and in this regard the DECUS '99 San Diego symposium is off to a good start. Initial headcount totals indicate that more than 2,500 people, including over 150 DECUS members from international chapters, will participate in the San Diego event.

Compaq CEO Michael Capellas and Business Critical Server
Division VP and General Manager Bill Heil kicked the ymposium off with a tag-team keynote address. During the keynote, Mr. Capellas expressed satisfaction with Compaq's 3FQ99 results and alluded to strong and ongoing growth in the Tru64 UNIX business. (The business grew 30 percent year over year in 3FQ99 and the first month of 4FQ99 isn't looking bad, either. Mr. Capellas, who wore an OpenVMS license plate in addition to more traditional neckware, offered his personal promise of continued support for OpenVMS. Both Capellas and Heil noted the level of customer angst surrounding the AlphaNT Magnum Oopus.

We'll have complete details on the Mike and Bill Show in the
post-symposium issue of Shannon Knows Compaq. In the
interim, here are some DECUS Day One highlights.

SKC's WildFire Watch

While roaming the Compaq Technology Center and Trade Show
floor, we encountered an operational AlphaServer GS320
"WildFire" enterprise server. The 16-CPU WildFire featured two hard partitions, one running Tru64 UNIX, the other running a two-instance OpenVMS Galaxy. The SKC WildFire Watch will continue this week as Compaq publicly reveals more information on the Mother of all Enterprise Servers.

Alpha-Bits

Compaq displayed the soon-to-be-announced AlphaServer
DS20E, a 5U rack-mount version of the DS20 that will start at under $13K USD for a Linux configuration. The new
cost-reduced AlphaServer DS10E "Slate" remains in the realm of the unannounced, but strong allusions were made to its
availability Pretty Soon Now. Also coming soon are 667MHz
EV67 upgrades to the AlphaServer ES40 and DS-series boxes.

A CPU Census

Compaq finally ‘fessed up to what SKC subscribers have known
for quite some time… the Alpha installed base now exceeds 500K systems and over 1M microprocessors. The half-million systems include over 100M enterprise-class servers and 250M
AlphaServers in general.

More "Triple-A" from the Marketing Flacks

Rather than asking customers if they would like a blot in their dot.com, Compaq is rolling out a new ad campaign focused on a 24 x 7 x COMPAQ theme. The first instantiation features drugstore.com and Tru64 UNIX.
