Nope Alex (or do you prefer The Small?), my grandfather didn't work in the Milltowns of Massachussetts. The grandfather in question worked 70 hour work weeks in a slaughterhouse in Fort Madison, Iowa. Spent all day long, 6 days a week smashing the heads of cute little cows, and dismembering their battered bodies. The other one was an Irish Catholic that couldn't get work, so he worked 70 hour weeks on the railroad.

Probably a little more challenging than running a sewing machine if you ask me. I agree that the Unions at the turn of the century did do a good job of reversing an economic system repressive on the laborers. But, people today have no clue what hard work is. I've had a taste of it, doing farm work for pay at 12, and turning over my paycheck to my folks by 14. But you are right, 70 hour work weeks are not the norm for me. I only do 2 of those a month, the other 2 are about 55 hours. (In midwest time btw, that doesn't include travel or lunch like it does out east.)

I was just making a comment on the yuppie culture of today. Get a job, get a credit card, spend the rest of your life paying it off, and whine that you work too much, all the time.
