What do I base it on? If the packet switched data was "around the corner", Bell Atlantic and Sprint would not bother introducing circuit switched wireless data service now.

It really depends on what you mean by "around the corner" but it is really easy to add circuit switched data to existing CDMA voice service so perhaps the carriers are just testing the waters and building interest before spending the money on packet switched data since it's not really ready yet. Irwin Jacobs spoke about the "first to market" advantage in wireless data. These carriers don't want the customers with the greatest need for wireless data to sign contracts with their competitors.

Comments on the ThinPhone and Sprint Internet.
I like the ThinPhone. The interface is similar to that of prior phones but has a number of improvements. I like being able to look at past calls and click "Time" and get the duration of the past several calls for billing purposes. I get off the phone quickly and forget to look at the duration.

I don't like the placement of the buttons. On my Q-phone, the message button is on the right and the clear (c) is on the left; the Talk and End buttons are at the bottom of the keyboard. On the ThinPhone, the Talk and End buttons are at the top on left and right and squeezed in the middle is the mail button. The clear is at the very bottom. The Q-Phone has better placement, because if one is inputting numbers with the thumb while holding the phone, you can reach the clear button easily when you hit the wrong button and need to make a correction.

Sprint internet connection is very slow. Last nite I kept getting a message that the service was unavailable. I played with it a little and I had already come close to using up my monthly 50 minutes and hadn't done anything.

We today celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the destruction of the Berlin Wall, November 9, 1989. Have you thought that the same week ten years ago was the first demonstration of Qcom's cdma? The communications revolution had a profound impact on ending the Cold War and the Iron Curtain; it has only accelerated since then.
