Consortium of Education Service Providers Who Create Cost-Effective,
Web-Based Portal Solutions for K-12 Schools Worldwide Host First
General Membership Meeting
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Members from the SchoolTone Alliance, a newly established consortium of leading technology and education service providers, for the first time ever will participate formally at the upcoming National School Boards Association (NSBA) tradeshow in Dallas Nov. 10 - 13.
Founded by Sun Microsystems in June 1999, the SchoolTone Alliance is an independent organization comprised of 24 member companies who have joined forces to promote the portal computing model and the benefits a scalable model like this creates for schools worldwide.
Portal computing enables schools to access a virtual desktop customized for the school and personalized for the user. Using existing PCs, Macs, workstations or thin client devices and standard Web browsers, teachers, administrators, students and parents are now able to access school-centric information including content, communication tools and applications. Users may pay a transaction or monthly usage fee instead of purchasing, upgrading and maintaining new hardware and software applications, thereby saving schools from the cost of administering and managing their own systems.
"The portal computing model is one of the leading models available to schools today that enables access to information at anytime, anywhere and to anyone," says SchoolTone Alliance Chairman Shirish Netke of Sun Microsystems. "The scalability feature of this model means that once the infrastructure is in place, the average cost of providing services to users is very low."
Members of the SchoolTone Alliance specialize in creating the solutions to support portal computing for the education industry. There are three membership levels -- Platinum, Gold and Silver -- which reflect a company's participatory level in the organization. Of the 24 SchoolTone Alliance members to date, 15 are participating at the NSBA show. They are: AboveNet Communications Inc., ACTV HyperTV Networks, Callisto Media Systems, Computer Curriculum Corporation, i-mind education systems, The Learningstation.com, Lucent Technologies, Open School, PowerSchool, Riverdeep Interactive Learning/Logal.net, SchoolCity, Sun Microsystems, Inc., Timecruiser, TutorNet and USA Video.
The SchoolTone Alliance will be in Booth #1631 at the NSBA show, which is being held at the Dallas Convention Center. Members from the 15 participating companies will be on hand to showcase individual company expertise. As well, more information about all the member companies can be found at schooltone.com .
SchoolTone's First Membership Meeting
In conjunction with NSBA, the SchoolTone Alliance will host its first general member meeting on Wednesday, November 10 at the Convention Center from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Room C244. Representatives from each of the member companies will be on hand to participate.
The SchoolTone Alliance is a global organization of leading education technology and service providers. Collectively, they create web based portal solutions for content, communication tools, applications and professional development for the education community.
