More on this article...

The addition of dynamic-price exchanges will allow Commerce One to address GM?s entire supply chain, including both direct and indirect goods. Previously Commerce One had focused primarily on indirect goods, essentially non-production goods needed for everyday operation but not included in finished goods.

Examples of indirect goods are office supplies, computer supplies, etc.

---- this is Ariba's area - non order cycle goods. As far as I know Ariba has never been positioned within the supply chain for manufactured goods. I see this as a major shortfall... of course technically there is no reason arba can't negotiate with customers to open up like Cmrc apparently did here but so far they have not....

Direct goods include parts and raw materials that are vital components of finished goods. Raw materials and components are subject to substantial changes in availability and market demand, and thus require a dynamic trading mechanism like bid-quote exchanges and auctions.
