EB: MSFT bought the original O/S from Seattle Software and the guy jumped at the 50,000 offered. And so it proceded from one stepping stone to the next. MSFT forced no one to accept their offer. No one believes that Mr. gates locked himself in a closet and wrote all this code. Most of CSCO's growth has been accomplished through acquisition. The technology industry moves to fast to have a "not invented here" attitude. The same might be said for GE to a lesser extent and TYCO as well.
