if you went down to buy a new Lexus, and you wanted a nice
economical, 4-cylinder engine.

The dealer would say what are you crazy! We don't offer no stinkin 4 cylinder engine. If you want a Toyota go to a Toyota dealer.

Try going to your Lexus dealer and asking for a Ford engine. Note the looks you'll get.

Tom

If a customer wanted a Lexus with a put-put motor, his request probably wouldn't be granted. My experience with Lexus dealers (The Commander's on his third Lexus) is that they'd politely direct him toward a car with a suitable and appropriate engine: the one they all come with. Getting any other engine would leave the customer with a less than satisfactory vehicle which neither he, nor anyone else would be happy with. Thus, the Lexus dealer would be saving our misinformed purchaser from his own foolishness.

The Lexus dealer would indeed be 'harming the consumer' if they honoured requests for inappropriately equipped vehicles. This is easier to see when we're discussing cars, a consumer product both familiar and simple enough for most people to understand; hence, many people choose cars as examples when trying to express their point.

We have freedom of choice; however, I don't mind my freedom curtailed a bit when all I've lost is the freedom to behave stupidly.

Cheers, PW.
