Linux, Kleiner Perkins & MRVC, Part 2

About 3 months ago just happened to speak with a programmer leaving the San Fernando Valley for the Bay area to work for Linuxcare, a Kleiner Perkins start-up. He said Linuxcare's original business plan was to build a Linux router. This was abandoned because someone else did it first. They are now a Linux support provider.

I started trying to connect the dots when KP invested in NAC. I assume if the above is true that KP is very aware of the Nbase-Xyplex Linux router and probably aware of everything else MRVC is doing. Is KP involved in the additional funding of CW and HC? Is KP assisting in finding top execs? KP is one of the very top Silicon Valley venture capital firms. Any additional association with MRVC would be a big plus.

Linuxcare just signed a support deal with IBM. Possibly they could provide support for the Linux router.

Does anyone know if the Nbase-Xyplex router uses the Open Source software of the Linux Router Project (LRP)?

By the way, if Linuxcare does an IPO soon it will probably be very hot and get a multi-billion dollar valuation.

Is news necessary to justify the price increase? Maybe not.

Optical transport and optical components, terabit routers and
fibre channel have all been the subject of intense board discussion, investment and technical conferences along with wildly optimistic growth projections. The leaders in these areas have seen their stocks explode in the last few weeks. Are we simply seeing a belated recognition of MRVCs participation in all these areas along with a bit of a short panic?

Some fibre channel companies: (I wonder if any of them are buying components from Optical Access)

Some networkers:

(Note the absence of earnings and billion dollar valuations of most
of the above companies!)

<The technology is so specialized, the barriers to entry are enormous. Companies like JDSU, SDLI, and ETEK have more business than they can handle>

<If what I'm hearing is correct, the next big play will be terabit routers>
