One reason I asked was because of a little blurb in Barron's:

"...For example, if Microsoft's SQL Server database program is no longer tied to Windows NT, all the vendors that make NT-based database software (such as Oracle, Informix and Sybase) might benefit, he says..."

There are those who would benefit from such a change, and those who would suffer. I was trying to determine the likelihood of such an event occurring, and from your answer, it would appear unlikely.
