Korean CDMA developments..... Good news....a pretty cool CDMA handset. They emphasize the fact that it has the MSM3000. SKY introduces new wireless data handset IM-1000 - For IS-95B 64Kpbs high-speed wireless data service - Deploys MSM 3000 chip enabling 8 day standby time - Enables wireless data service without handset-PC data cable connection (Sept 22, 1999) SK Teletech unveiled today a new high-end 80g SKY model handset IM-1000 (a flip model) with the significantly strengthened wireless data transmission capabilities, which will become available in the market on September 21. IM-1000 is built on IS-95B technology that allows 64Kpbs transmission, faster than wireline connection, and uses infrared port to connect with the PC. In addition, it has the cutting-edge MSM 3000 chips embedded that allows the battery to last up to 8 days without recharging if left unused. Loaded with the slimmer battery of the two, the handset weighs only 87g and is designed to fit snuggly in the back pocket without making it look bulging. It is outfitted with a metal cover giving it the "techno" look, which emerged as the hottest look of the year in the pop culture. It is designed to appeal mainly to the young buyers. IM-1000 has the following features. ¡à IS-95B wireless data communications service at 64Kbps IS-95B technology deployed by IM-700 enables users of n.TOP, wireless data service of SK Telecom to enjoy 64Kbps data transmission as well as high-speed Internet search and quick multimedia content downloading. ¡à First model enabling infrared connection with the PC in Korea IM-1000 is the first handset model developed in Korea that supports the communications capability using infrared radiation. ¤ýData cable connection between the handset and the PC is unnecessary. ¤ýWith the handsets connected to their PCs, users can use the data management function of SKY handsets in managing personal data, editing phone number lists, selecting animation, customized alerting melodies and alarm sounds, and exchanging short messages (SMS). ¤ýUsers can exchange phone lists or melody and animation files with one another over their handsets. ¡à PIM (Personal Information Management) The Personal Information Management, or PIM, is a digital phone list where users can store and retrieve up to 1,200 phone numbers. Users can store the home and office numbers, mobile numbers, pager numbers and anniversary dates such as birthdays, wedding anniversaries or first dates in their PIM. It has an alarm feature that reminds users of important anniversaries. ¡à MSM 3000 chip enables 8 day standby time Equipped with the MSM 3000 chip and the super energy-saving circuit design by SK Teletech, the new model, if left unused, lasts up to 8 days without having to recharge the battery. ¡à Quick Hangul entrance The various components of Hangul (Korean alphabet) characters are displayed on the LCD so that users can enter Hangul alphabets easily without referring to the letters on the keypad. In addition, the stages of entering each of the three components of a character - the first, the middle and the last components - are indicated automatically on the screen to assist users in quick and easy entering of the characters. ¡à "One-Touch" answering & recording functions When unable to answer the phone, users can record short messages and use the phone like an answering machine. The messages on the machine can be checked with a touch of a button. If the user is in a quiet place and still wants to answer the phone, she can activate the "etiquette" function to make her soft voice heard amplified to the caller. On activating this function, the phone shifts automatically into the vibration mode and the keypad tone becomes mute. Using the "one-touch" function, users can record and replay the phone conversations, too. ¡à Other enhanced and easy-to-use features In addition, IM-1000 ¤ýdeploys the next-generation 32bit CPU enabling high-speed processing ¤ýrealizes the perfect man-machine interface between users and the handsets allowing users to use various functions on the menu by fiddling simply with the multi-function key following the instructions appearing on the LCD without referring to the manual ¤ýoffers two LCD colors - red and yellow - of which the user can choose

It looks like SK Telecom is thinking about going with W-CDMA....any ideas how expensive it would be to go from IS-95B to W-CDMA? sktelecom.co.kr SK Telecom held the IMT-2000 technology development seminar at its namdaemun headquarters Oct. 6 and announced its plan to complete the development of the 2Mbps commercial integrated asynchronous IMT-2000 system by February 2002 to the audience of 100-plus representatives of the equipment manufacturers.
